The United States is dependent on crude oil from many locations around the world and imports nearly 60 percent of the crude it uses. This map shows the average percentage of daily crude (millions of barrels) imported into the United States from the top 15 exporting nations in September 2012. The United States produced the remaining 40 percent from its own sources. Canada’s exports into the United States rose from 21 percent in September 2009 to nearly 28 percent by September 2010.
