Figure 6.11: Dams on the Tigris and Euphrates drainage basins. Turkey’s projects to manage the Tigris and Euphrates river basins through dam construction have international implications. Water that is retained in Turkey will not reach its neighbors. The main map shows Turkey’s dams on the headwaters of the two rivers, as well as dams built in Syria and Iraq, all of which will have environmental effects, especially on the lower reaches of both rivers in Iraq. The smaller map shows the full extent of Turkey’s Southeastern Anatolia Project.
