Figure 9.22: Foreign investment capital in China, 2010. Foreign investment in China reached nearly $115 billion in 2010, and more than $124 billion in 2011. Note that investment from Hong Kong, even though it is part of China, is considered “foreign” here. Many investments that actually originate in various countries across the globe are funneled through Hong Kong banks, as was the case when Hong Kong was a British territory. The same holds true for small banking centers such as in Taiwan, the Virgin Islands, and the Cayman Islands.
