Reasons to Use Coordinating Conjunctions

Each coordinating conjunction has a slightly different meaning and will have a different effect on the joined clauses.
- To show cause and effect, use for or so.
We sat in the back of the theater, for all of the good seats were taken.
Class was cancelled, so we met in the library.
- To show addition, use and.
Viruses can corrupt your files, and they can damage your hard drive.
- To show a negative alternative, use nor.
Chickens can’t fly, nor can they run very fast.
- To show a contrast, use but or yet.
Electric cars do not use gasoline, but their batteries are charged using conventional energy.
The average annual temperature is rising, yet last winter was the coldest on record.
- To show an alternative, use or.
In the fall I will go to medical school, or I will join the Peace Corps.
