Describe how Ben’s plans after college graduation reflect that his family operates according to collectivist values.

Student responses should mention that in spite of Ben’s individual desire to pursue a law degree he is readily willing to put the needs of his family first, indicating that is what is best for the family as a whole is most important and his individual goals, therefore, have a lower priority.

Quinn says she is going on to grad school as she had planned while Anita says she is moving back home to be with her family rather than pursue a potential job far away. In this scene can you find evidence that Quinn comes from a family that is more individualistic than Anita's?

Students should answer “No” and explain that Quinn says that if her family—or even the extended community she grew up in—needed her she’d change her plans “in a heartbeat,” which strongly suggests she values the needs and desires of the group over her own individual needs and desires.
