Biodiversity hotspots. Thirty-four biodiversity hotspots have been identified for terrestrial sites around the world. These sites contain at least 1,500 endemic plant species and have experienced at least a 70 percent decline in their vegetation. While the criteria used are based on plants, these areas also contain a high diversity of animals.
