General Andrew Jackson In 1819, Jackson sat for this miniature portrait on ivory made by Anna Claypoole Peale, a member of the artistic Peale family of Philadelphia. At the time, Jackson was in Washington to defend himself against possible congressional charges arising from his unauthorized hangings in Florida. His charming smile and tousled hair do not betray anxiety about the outcome of the proceedings.
