“The Political Barbecue,” 1834 Political cartooning became a high art in the 1830s. Here, Pig Jackson roasts on a barbecue grill, fed by the fires of “public opinion” kindled by his decision to take down the Bank of the United States. Political opponents happy to see him get cooked include Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and Nicholas Biddle, president of the bank. The cartoon is a fantasy: Public opinion generally backed Jackson.
