SLAVE POT Enslaved African American potters made tens of thousands of ceramic pots to hold water and store food. The most renowned slave potter, Dave, worked in Edgefield District, South Carolina. At a time when teaching slaves to read or write was a crime, Dave often signed his work with a grand flourish.
