Kansas Dr. John Doy (seated), an antislavery campaigner in Kansas, was captured, along with thirteen runaway slaves, in January 1859 by proslavery men. Doy’s friends pose proudly here after they rescued him in July from a St. Joseph, Missouri, jail.
