“This Is a White Man’s Government” (1868) This Thomas Nast cartoon lambasts the Democratic Party’s recent platform advocating white supremacy. Nast portrays the Democrats as a white Southerner with a knife, a stereotyped Irishman with a club, and a plutocrat lifting a wallet that reads, “capital for votes.” They all rest a foot on the back of a prostrate African American soldier.
