Immigrant Mothers and Children Like many other immigrants, these mothers and children in New York City lived in crowded, run-down apartments. Packed together on the rude bench, the small children cling to their mothers in the presence of the photographer, Lewis Hine, who was documenting living conditions among the poor. Presumably the men in these families were at work when the photographer visited their home.
