Pearl Harbor Attack A Japanese photographer took this picture just as the attack on Pearl Harbor began. A torpedo has exploded into the American battleship West Virginia, causing the huge plume of water and smoke. Other ships have already been torpedoed and are listing. Two Japanese aircraft can be seen in the upper right quadrant of the picture while Japanese submarines are invisible beneath the surface of the water.
