Birth Control In the 1960s, the advent of the birth control pill, court decisions lifting restrictions on contraception, the rise of feminism, and demands for greater sexual freedom all threw birth control into the political spotlight. In July 1968, Pope Paul VI issued an encyclical condemning artificial birth control, which prompted this demonstration in front of New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
