Protest in Chicago The worst violence surrounding the August 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago occurred near the Hilton Hotel, where most of the delegates stayed. When some 3,000 protesters marching toward the convention site confronted a line of police, the police attacked not only the demonstrators but also reporters, hotel guests, and bystanders, driving a crowd through a plate-glass hotel window and injuring hundreds.
