School Busing Controversy over busing as a means of integration erupted in Boston in 1974 after a federal judge ruled that Boston officials had deliberately constructed a segregated school system. Antibusing outrage was especially virulent at historically white South Boston High School, where one black student recalled that “it was like a war zone.” Here Tactical Patrol Force officers protect black students at the high school.
