POWDER HORN FROM THE SEVEN YEARS’ WAR To reload muskets, soldiers carried this handy moisture-tight powder horn. Made from the durable horn of an ox or a bull, many powder horns survived the harsh rigors of wartime to become treasured souvenirs. Elaborate carvings, often with names and dates, individualized each horn. This horn from 1758 charts the forts and river systems extending from New York City to Canada, providing a convenient map of unfamiliar territory.
