When the Germans used poison gas, the Allies condemned the German innovation as diabolic but quickly developed poison gas of their own. Despite this gas mask’s crude appearance, it proved highly effective. Fewer than 1,500 American soldiers died from gas, but many of those who were gassed and survived were disabled.
