Training at Fort Slocum, New York, Brownie complained about the army’s red tape, bad food, shortage of equipment, inexperienced officers, lack of sleep, and physical exhaustion. Still, he enjoyed the camaraderie of the camp and was, as this photograph reveals, a happy soldier. When his unit arrived at Saint-Nazaire in October 1917, Brownie was proud to be one of the first doughboys in France. Courtesy of Janet W. Hansen.
