1956 CADILLAC CONVERTIBLE

The automobile reflected both corporate and family prosperity in the 1950s. By 1960, three of every four households had a car, and the auto industry generated one of every six jobs. This Cadillac was manufactured by General Motors, the biggest and richest corporation in the world. A massive interstate highway system and vast suburban housing developments fueled Americans' mobility and devotion to consumption. © Ron Kimball/Kimball Stock.
