Children and teenagers played a key role in the civil rights campaign in Birmingham, Alabama, in May 1963. As shown here, police stopped the children and led them into jail. After more than 1,000 young people filled the jails, police used water hoses and dogs against the next stream of demonstrators, bringing national attention to the protesters and some concessions from Birmingham leaders.
