A Difficult Decision with a Positive Outcome
Caitlin Prokop wrote the following essay as she was preparing to begin her studies at Brevard Community College in Florida. Later, she went on to pursue a degree in elementary education at the University of Hawaii. She was inspired to write this essay by her parents. Caitlin understands the balance between inspiration and revision in writing and offers this advice: “Follow what the brain is telling the hand. Let it flow. If you cannot write about the topic that is given, put yourself in someone else’s shoes and then write. Let your thoughts flow; then, revise and edit to get the finished copy.”

Every Thursday is our day, a day when we talk to each other about what is going on in our lives, so that we will never again have a distant relationship. A third good outcome of my decision is that I can go to Brevard Community College, which is right down the street. In high school, I had thought that I would want to go away to college, but then I realized that I would miss my home. By staying here, I have the opportunity to attend a wonderful college that is preparing me for transferring to a four-
