Dangling Modifiers

A dangling modifier “dangles” because the word or word group it modifies is not in the sentence. Dangling modifiers usually appear at the beginning of a sentence and seem to modify the noun or pronoun that immediately follows them, but they are really modifying another word or group of words.

DANGLING Rushing to class, the books fell out of my bag.
[The books were not rushing to class.]
CLEAR Rushing to class, I dropped my books.

There are two basic ways to correct dangling modifiers. Use the one that makes more sense. One way is to add the word being modified immediately after the opening modifier so that the connection between the two is clear.

Another way is to add the word being modified in the opening modifier itself.
