Semicolon

SEMICOLONS TO JOIN CLOSELY RELATED SENTENCES

Use a semicolon to join two closely related sentences into one sentence.

In an interview, hold your head up and do not slouch; it is important to look alert.

Make good eye contact; looking down is not appropriate in an interview.

SEMICOLONS WHEN ITEMS IN A LIST CONTAIN COMMAS

Use semicolons to separate items in a list that itself contains commas. Otherwise, it is difficult for readers to tell where one item ends and another begins.

For dinner, Bob ate an order of onion rings; a 16-ounce steak; a baked potato with sour cream, bacon bits, and cheese; a green salad; and a huge bowl of ice cream with fudge sauce.

Because one item, a baked potato with sour cream, bacon bits, and cheese, contains its own commas, all items need to be separated by semicolons.
