Finding, Narrowing, and Exploring Your Topic

A topic is who or what you are writing about. It is the subject of your paragraph or essay.

QUESTIONS FOR FINDING A GOOD TOPIC

Does this topic interest me? If so, why do I care about it?
Do I know something about the topic? Do I want to know more?
Can I get involved with some part of the topic? Is it relevant to my life in some way?
Is the topic specific enough for the assignment (a paragraph or a short essay)?

Choose one of the following topics or one of your own and focus on one part of it that you are familiar with. (For example, focus on one personal goal or a specific problem of working students that interests you.)

Music/group I like	Sports
Problems of working students	An essential survival skill
An activity/group I am involved in	A personal goal

Use the general topic you have chosen to complete practice exercises 2 and 3.
