Write a description paragraph or essay on one of the following topics or on one of your own choice. For help, refer to “Checklist: How to Write Description.”
COLLEGE
Describe the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes in the cafeteria or another dining spot on campus.
Find a place where you can get a good view of your campus (for instance, a window on an upper floor of one of the buildings). Then, describe the scene using space order (see “Use Space Order to Write About Events” in Chapter 3).
WORK
Describe your workplace, including as many sensory details as you can.
Describe your boss or a colleague you work with closely. First, think of the main impression you get from this person. Then, choose details that would make your impression clear to readers.
EVERYDAY LIFE
Describe a holiday celebration from your past, including as many sensory details as possible. Think back on the people who attended, the food served, the decorations, and so on.
Visit an organization that serves your community, such as an animal shelter or a food pantry. During your visit, take notes about what you see. Later, write a detailed description of the scene.
