Phosphorus, needed by all organisms to make DNA, cycles very slowly. It has no atmospheric component but instead depends on the weathering of rock to release new supplies of phosphate (PO₄) into bodies of water or the soil, where it dissolves in water and can be taken up by organisms. Microbes also play a role when they break down organic material and release the phosphate to the soil.
