In one study, researchers discovered that participants could “remember” hot air balloon rides they never took after looking at doctored photos of themselves as children on balloon rides. The researchers speculate that a photo “helps subjects to imagine details about the event that they later confuse with reality” (Garry & Gerrie, 2005, p. 321).
