Soft Like Mommy
A baby monkey in a laboratory experiment clings to a furry mother surrogate. Research by Harry and Margaret Harlow and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin showed that physical comfort is important for the socioemotional development of these animals. When given the choice between a wire mesh “mother” that provided milk and a cloth-covered “mother” without milk, most of the monkeys opted to snuggle with the cuddly cloth-covered one.
