A study conducted by Lisa Farwell and Bernard Weiner (2000; Study 1) was very similar to the task you just performed. In their study, 96 undergraduate students took on the same role as a board member for a charitable organization. The participants were presented with potential recipients that were very similar to the ones you were presented with, and were also asked as to how much money each recipient should receive. One additional question that the participants were asked was how liberal or conservative their own views were in general. Do you think that a person’s political ideology would play a role in how much money they would award particular recipients?

Other results: Graph showed ratings People not responsible for misfortune Liberal equals 9, Middle of the Road equals 9, Conservative equals 9 point 1 and People not responsible for misfortune Liberal equals 5 point 1, Middle of the Road equals 5 point 1, Conservative equals 3 point 9

Results of the Farewell and Weiner study (2000; Study 1) showed that potential recipients portrayed as not responsible for their misfortune were awarded significantly more than those portrayed as responsible. The three ideological groups did not differ in their ratings towards those not responsible, but participants who rated themselves as liberal awarded those responsible for their misfortune significantly more money than the other two ideological groups. Are these results similar to your ratings? Do these results align with what you have experienced in your own life?
