Erik Erikson, who was born in Germany, took a long time to settle into a career. Instead of attending college, he wandered around Europe pursuing his interest in art for several years. Eventually, he was hired as an art instructor in a school run by Anna Freud, Sigmund Freud’s daughter, and became an analyst. He moved to the United States in the early 1930s, when fascism was on the rise in Germany.
