Some developmentalists see shifts in children’s conception of friendship as discontinuous. Others maintain that children’s conception of friendship is basically unaltered over time. Explain these different views.

Those who view children’s conception of friendship as discontinuous maintain that children’s ideas of friendship are related to their ability to take another’s perspective and that as children are increasingly able to consider the views and needs of others, they increasingly understand the need for mutual consideration and satisfaction in friendship. Other researchers maintain that children of all ages recognize that reciprocity is key in friendship; what changes over time is the complexity with which children express this fundamental understanding.
