Approximately 5 minutes.
Synopsis:
The following video clip explores the topic of aggression in children.
In this video clip, a group of boys from what the narrator refers to as “an exclusive kindergarten school” is seen singing “Waltzing Matilda” in Latin. The world of another group of seven year olds who are seen fighting in the school yard is described by the narrator as “primitive, even violent.”
One of the enduring themes of child development introduced in the first chapter of the text is the question of how nature and nurture together shape development. Consider the two different “worlds” highlighted in the video clip. How might nature and nurture have worked together to shape the aggressive behavior seen in one group of boys and the relatively mild-mannered nature of the other group of boys?
