Excerpts from “Up” Documentary: Discipline and Self-Discipline

Estimated Completion Time:

Approximately 5 minutes.

Synopsis:

In this video clip, three different groups of children are briefly observed participating in their daily exercise activities as an illustration of the notion of discipline versus freedom.

The filmmakers contrast the discipline inherent in the exercises and daily schedule of one group of children with the freedom inherent in the practices of another group.  As you view this video clip, carefully observe these children and develop your own hypotheses about their similarities and differences.

1.

When you observed the groups of children highlighted in this video clip, did you make the same distinction between discipline and freedom as did the filmmaker? How might the historical era and community in which you live have influenced your perspective on these children’s practices? As a student of child development, do you believe it is possible to be entirely objective in your view of individual differences?

Child developmentalists work towards objectivity in their work and in their views of individual differences. One can understand the difficult nature of this task when one recognizes the influence of sociocultural context on one’s own perspective.
