Synopsis:
In 1964, a group of British children, all seven years old and from diverse backgrounds and towns all over England, were brought together as subjects of the film Seven Up! Researcher turned filmmaker, Michael Apted, has continued to follow the “children” at seven-year intervals since then, creating his famous Up documentary series. In the following clip, the narrator introduces the vision of the first film.
In the following clip, the narrator introduces the audience to the film’s premise, the Jesuit maxim “Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man.” The film’s intention was to capture a moment in the lives of individuals who, the filmmaker postulated, would go on to occupy a variety of positions in Britain in the year 2000.
By creating a film that examines the lives of seven-year-olds in order to gain a perspective on the adults of the year 2000, the filmmaker reveals his perspective on child development. In what ways do you think a snapshot of a life at age seven could provide a picture of the life of an adult? What three questions would you be sure to ask these seven- year-olds if you were a filmmaker whose objective was to capture a vision of their future?
