1.

The first chapter of the text introduced methods for studying child development, including contexts for gathering data about children, the concepts of correlation and causation, and designs for examining development. Describe the documentary series’ methodology and design as if it were designed as a scientific study of child development. Identify the problems described by the participants in the clip.

The design of the documentary series is correlational rather than experimental and is most similar to a longitudinal design. Both structured interviews and naturalistic observations are seen in the clips. The film’s subjects raise several concerns about the conclusions of the film, including whether its internal validity is compromised by fact that the subjects have had the opportunity to see each film and get to know one another and one another’s circumstances.
