Figure 2-19 A Refracting Telescope A refracting telescope consists of a large-diameter objective lens with a long focal length and a small eyepiece lens of short focal length. The eyepiece lens magnifies the image formed by the objective lens in its focal plane (shown as a dashed line). To take a photograph, the eyepiece is removed and the film or electronic detector is placed in the focal plane.
