Figure 2-21  RIVUXG Giant Magellan Telescope This artist’s rendering shows the seven primary objective mirrors of the Giant Magellan Telescope, planned for completion in 2020. These seven mirrors with diameters of 8.4 m (27.6 ft) add their light together and work as if they were one telescope with an enormous diameter of 22 m (72 ft) across. The tiny secondary mirror is seen at the top and supported by thin bars above the primary mirrors. Notice that the center mirror has a tiny opening so that light reflected downward from the secondary mirror can reach the scientific instruments under the telescope.
