Figure 3-6 A Heliocentric Explanation of Retrograde Motion In the heliocentric model of Aristarchus, Earth and the other planets orbit the Sun. Earth travels around the Sun more rapidly than Mars. Consequently, as Earth overtakes and passes this slower-moving planet, Mars appears for a few months (from points 4 through 6) to fall behind and move backward with respect to the background of stars.
