Figure 6-23 Water Beneath the Martian Surface This map of the abundance of water (probably in the form of ice) just below the surface of Mars is based on data collected from orbit by the Mars Odyssey spacecraft. These measurements can only reveal the presence of water or water ice to a depth of about a meter; there may be much more water at greater depths.
