Figure 7-4  RIVUXG Jupiter’s Changing Appearance The images on the left show Jupiter “losing” a southern brown color between 2009 and 2010 that returns in 2011. Just north of the equator, another belt thins and nearly fades from view before returning bright white in 2012. The infrared images in the center and on the right reveal areas that are the clearest and driest regions on the planet, showing up in infrared because they reveal the changing thermal energy emerging from a very deep layer of Jupiter’s atmosphere.
