Figure 9-13 RIVUXG Sunspots This high-resolution photograph of the photosphere shows a mature sunspot pair. The dark center of the spot is called the umbra. It is bordered by the penumbra, which is less dark and has a featherlike appearance. Granulation is visible in the surrounding, undisturbed photosphere.
