This work of graphic fiction is part of a longer story, “Hawaiian Getaway,” that was collected in Adrian Tomine’s 2003 book Summer Blonde. “Hawaiian Getaway” enters the world of Hillary Chan, a twenty-something trying to cope with a difficult mother, a judgmental and high-achieving sister, and growing feelings of isolation.
