We are fortunate to live at a time when a rich and varied store of graphic fiction is available. Following are a few critically praised works that, excerpted or as a whole, offer interesting stories for analysis—A Child’s Life and Other Stories by Phoebe Gloeckner; Ghost World by Daniel Clowes; The Greatest of Marlys by Lynda Barry; Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth by Chris Ware; Sandman by Neil Gaiman; and Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Also available are collections of graphic fiction, among them An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, & True Stories, edited by Ivan Brunetti, and the Best American Comics series, edited by Jessica Abel and Matt Madden. Many of these works should be available through your college’s library. Choose one of these works or another graphic novel or story and analyze it.
