Much has been written about the “hefty college-tuition debt” problem that Fendrich refers to and what should be done to prevent students from accumulating high debt in the first place. Among the strategies that have been suggested are (1) allowing students to consolidate government loans and make a single monthly payment at a lower interest rate, (2) reducing federal subsidies to public institutions that do not find ways to limit tuition increases, and (3) making tuition debt dischargeable through bankruptcy. Take a position on one of these strategies or on another controversial approach to addressing the student-debt problem.
