Film reviewers may acknowledge on occasion that their opinion differs significantly from the prevailing point of view. Most often, though, writers of evaluations do not engage in debate. They often do, however, try to anticipate and respond to readers’ possible questions and concerns. Boxer anticipates potential concerns of two groups of readers: “nongamers” and “hardcore gamers.”

ANALYZE & WRITE

Write a few paragraphs analyzing and evaluating how Boxer responds to the possible concerns of nongamers and hardcore gamers:

  1. Reread paragraphs 8–11 to identify where Boxer refers to these two groups of readers.
  2. Analyze the wording to determine whether Boxer is conceding or refuting criticism that one of these groups may be likely to make about LA Noire.
  3. Whether you regard yourself as a nongamer, a hardcore gamer, or someone in between, how effective do you think Boxer’s response is likely to be for his readers?
