Many problems with inappropriate language occur when writers use informal language in a more formal writing situation.
| INFORMAL | Treating old people badly gets everyone upset because that’s your family, and no one wants to get judged for putting their mom in a home. |
| MORE FORMAL | Mistreatment of the elderly is an unusually sensitive problem because it involves such value-laden ideas as home and family. |
Taking your essay assignment into account, reword as necessary to avoid shifts in the level of formality.
