P3-d Use a semicolon to join two independent clauses when the second clause contains a conjunctive adverb or a transitional expression.

conjunctive adverb A word or phrase (such as finally, however, or therefore) that tells how the ideas in two sentences or independent clauses are connected.

transitional expression A word or group of words that expresses the relationship between one sentence and the next.

Because a semicolon shows a strong relationship between independent clauses, writers often use it to reinforce the connection expressed by the adverb or transition.
