Editing for -ed or -d endings

Speakers who delete the -ed or -d endings in conversation may forget to include them in academic writing. If you tend to drop these endings, make a point of checking for them when proofreading. Underline all the verbs, and then underline a second time any that are past tense or past participles. Check each of these for an -ed or -d ending. Unless the verb is irregular (see the list in 39c), it should end in -ed or -d.
