42aUnderstanding adjectives and adverbs

Adjectives modify nouns and pronouns, answering the question which? how many? or what kind? Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, or entire clauses; they answer the question how? when? where? or to what extent? Many adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives (slight, slightly), but many are not (outdoors, very). And some words that end in -ly are adjectives (lovely, homely). To tell adjectives and adverbs apart, identify the word’s function in the sentence.
